What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome [CTS]?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the result of an impairment
to the median nerve caused by cumulative trauma through use
of the muscles and tendons in and around the carpal tunnel.
*HERE*
is a picture.
What are the Primary CTS risk factors?
- Repetitiveness
- Postures
- Contact stresses
- Forceful exertions
Who is at Risk?
Especially at risk are computer users, manufacturing
and assembly-line workers, data entry workers and programmers,
secretarial workers and transcriptionists, painters, musicians,
carpenters and construction workers. Athletes are also susceptible
due to the repetition and forces involved in their activity.
Low force tasks involving high repetition and long duration
have negative effects on the body. In jobs requiring computer
work the users may be faced with high pressure working conditions
so they tend to ignore or at least tolerate the signs brought
on by the cumulative trauma created by the work. The user
may only take a break after the project is finished and there
is permanent damage.
Activities or jobs that require repetitive flexion and extension
of the wrist (eg, keyboard use) may pose an occupational risk.
